Possum Kingdom Lake Sightseeing

Possum Kingdom Lake is home to both natural and manmade scenic wonders. The reservoir’s landscape and structures tell the story of its significant history with stoic, memory-absorbing cliffs as the setting of annual fireworks, gorgeous state parks, and masonry that any hard worker can respect.

Hell’s Gate
Possum Kingdom Lake’s most famous attraction is Hell’s Gate. Hell’s Gate is a naturally-formed structure consisting of two giant limestone cliffs forming a narrow pass between the Possum Kingdom Lake mainland and Devil’s Island. The cliffs stand at 90-feet tall and are surrounded by water 26-feet deep. Because the landmark is such a spectacle, it’s often the location for fishing, partying, and the famous Fourth of July Fireworks display.

Possum Kingdom Lake State Park

All of the classic mainstays of lakeside recreation are available through the Possum Kingdom Lake State Park, curated and built by CCC workers way back in the 1940s. Camping, hiking, and days spent reading on a picnic blanket are all available with overlook points of interest and a fishing pier. The park has settings from modernly situated campsites with electricity to primitive walk-in sites.

Possum Kingdom Stone Arch Bridge

Built in 1942, the Possum Kingdom Stone Arch Bridge is the longest masonry arch bridge in Texas (433 feet). The bridge is constructed from locally quarried limestone and utilized over 300 local laborers across two years of construction.
