Boat Winterization
Boat winterization is often used when your boat is left inactive for several months at a time, no matter the season. Your inboard/outboard boat, pontoon, houseboat or personal watercraft should be professionally winterized and stored to prevent the high cost of damages later during these unforeseen “bumps in the road”.
Life happens and sometimes circumstances can change on a dime – oftentimes without warning. Unexpected career moves may leave less recreational time, health or financial changes happen, or maybe even a new addition to the family that requires your constant attention.
Boats are a large recreational undertaking, so protect your investment and don't procrastinate. Contact our service center on Possum Kingdom Lake to schedule your boat winterizing before the rush begins or the weather becomes inclement. Why risk it? If you lack the tools or knowledge to properly winterize boat components, give us a call. We will be happy to take care of your prized possession for you.

Boat Winterization Frequently Asked Questions
Is it important to winterize your boat in Texas, even if it's not that cold?
It's a common misconception that winterizing a boat in Texas is a waste of time. But then again, many boaters misunderstand the full purpose of winterization in that it's not solely intended for freezing temperatures. While it's true Texas boat winterization protects your watercraft from damages that can occur during an unexpected freeze, it also protects your boat from the surrounding climate, its corrosion within the environment, and damaging storms. Whether your boat is in dry storage or a wet slip, boat winterizing is imperative.
How long does boat winterization last?
Ideally, a boat winterization lasts one year. Many boaters have pushed it to two years or more. Keep in mind when winterizing your boat for more than a year, you will need to take special care to check rubber parts and components for dry rot like hoses, impellers, engine primer bulbs, and belts. Additionally, you might want to give serious consideration to spraying the appropriate lube spray on working metal parts and purging your gas tank to refill with fresh gas. A fresh oil change and close inspection of the hull would also be strongly encouraged.
If your boat has been in shrink wrap, we would recommend unwrapping it to prevent smelly mildew within the boat's interior. Consider making yourself a service checklist to systematically inspect other critical areas like your motor, generator, fluid levels, heater, ignition starting systems, and bilge pumps.
When is the best time to get boat winterization done?
At the end of the boating season between September and October is boat winterization time, as unsuspected cold snaps and wicked storms have been known to raise their ugly heads in the beginning of November. We say September candidly because there are always boaters attempting to winterize their boats at the last minute. Let's not forget to winterize our jet skis! The PWC needs some TLC to keep it purring like a kitten.
